Rat Control – How a Nearby Construction Led to an Infestation at a Popular Restaurant.

Introduction

Sometimes, even the most unexpected factors lead to rat infestations in urban settings. Recently, we were called to a large, popular restaurant experiencing unusual rat activity after local construction damaged nearby sewer systems and heavy rain drove rats to seek refuge. With a welcoming courtyard and open doors during warmer months, the restaurant quickly became an attractive new hideaway for these determined intruders.

The Challenge: Rats Taking Over the Courtyard

Rats had begun to appear frequently on the restaurant’s courtyard and terrace gardens, with some even slipping inside when doors were left open. Although no customer complaints had been reported, the staff was becoming increasingly concerned, and local pest control traps had so far remained empty. As rat sightings increased, the likelihood of customer encounters grew, potentially threatening the restaurant’s reputation and hygiene standards.

RatTech’s Targeted Solution

I started with a thorough inspection to understand the layout and find potential rat pathways. The cooler weather meant that rats, when food was abundant, would often remain in their nests. So, with the facility manager’s help, we developed a feeding strategy, placing small amounts of a local treat at designated spots around 9 p.m. each night. This food required them to stay on-site while eating, allowing me to observe their movements from a discreet location.

Precision in the Dark

At around 9:30 p.m., the first rat emerged, much larger than expected. Initially, I mistook it for a hedgehog through my thermal scope. Using my advanced ATN scope with night vision, I could clearly see the rat’s reflective eyes, helping me aim with precision. The scope’s laser rangefinder calculated the exact distance, allowing for precise pellet placement and minimizing the risk of suffering or collateral damage.

One by one, within five minutes, I eliminated four rats. The other rats were unfazed by the sudden disappearance of their companions, providing a unique opportunity to swiftly and humanely reduce the population. The customers inside were blissfully unaware, and by evening’s end, both the restaurant’s owner and staff felt relief.

Conclusion

Infestations can be managed, but the underlying issues, like the damaged sewer, need attention for lasting results. Hopefully, the repairs will prevent further migration and traditional traps will again be effective. If not, I’d be glad to return to this incredible urban location to help keep it safe and welcoming for everyone.

Best Regards,

Eric
